There is just something about relaxing on a porch. After years of city living, I have come to enjoy the quiet retreat of my back porch so much. Sitting in a rocking chair with an early cup of coffee or something a little more potent later in the day has become some of my most treasured moments. I think that it is the gesture of stopping and taking a moment to breath in the surroundings, to take time and be still. As a creative person I love how my mind wanders and yearns for new ideas, but it has always been a challenge to hush my thoughts so that I can relax. Over the last few years I have almost been forced to stop and learn to enjoy the present. Right now, my porch is providing that quiet retreat and I am so grateful.
As I am spending more and more time there I thought that I would spruce it up a little bit. I really enjoy the concept of an outdoor living space. Until we can landscape the rest of our backyard the back porch is where we go to sit. I figure why not make it an extension of our living room?
As life is ever evolving, I am sure the porch will continue to grow and change. For now I had fun bringing a bit of life to it. I immediately loved this hanging planter from Target. I actually purchased two for my office, but decided that for summer that touch of gold would look so snazzy outside. I have hung them here as an accent to my antique stained glass window. If you are looking for additional gold accents, Anthropologie has some lovely metallic ones here.
OF COURSE BEING A NASHVILLE RESIDENT, I HAD TO HAVE THIS JACK DANIELS WHISKEY BARREL. MY FIRST INTENTION WAS TO MAKE A PLANTER OUT OF IT WHEN I FIRST BOUGHT IT 7 YEARS AGO. AS IT HAS MOVED WITH US, IT HAS BEEN A HOLDER FOR FIREWOOD IN NEW ENGLAND AND WITH A PIECE OF GLASS HAS NOW TRANSITIONED INTO A SIDE TABLE.
THE BEST PART OF OUTDOOR PORCH LIFE IS THE FLORA THAT MAKES IT FEEL WELCOMING. I LOVE MY PLANTS. I LOVE THE LIFE AND WARMTH THAT THEY INSTANTLY BRING. NOW A DAYS YOU DON’T HAVE TO HAVE A GREEN THUMB. THESE MONSTER HARDWARE STORES SELL PRE-POTTED PLANTS FOR YOU AND ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS STICK IT OUTSIDE AND THEN MAKE SURE IT SURVIVES. I ENJOY GETTING MY HANDS DIRTY AND WORKING IN THE EARTH, SO I LIKE TO PLANT BUT IF YOU JUST WANT TO HAVE A LITTLE GREEN OUTSIDE, FERNS ARE WONDERFUL AND AGAIN POTTED SUCCULENTS ARE SOLID CHOICE. ASIDE FROM THE ACTUAL PLANT, A NICE POT CAN MAKE A GREAT STATEMENT. I ENJOY THE VARIED TEXTURES AND SHAPES THAT PLANTERS ARE COMING IN, THEY HAVE REALLY BECOME A NICE ACCENT. SOME OTHER BEAUTIFUL PLANTER OPTIONS CAN BE FOUND HERE AND HERE.
The biggest key for the porch is to have fun and remember to keep part of your style outside! For me, the "fun"was the yellow accents. THIS BAR STOOL FIT PERFECTLY with my outside accent color, plus the design is just fantastic. IT'S A QUIRKY ADDITION AND I LOVE IT. THE BIRD HOUSE IS A NEAR REPLICA OF OUR HOME, SO it definitely needed to be an addition. Good luck decorating!
